I've never met Ryan Davis, but I cried so hard when I found out he was dead. At first I thought it was some sick joke, and it finally hit me. Gaming news just won't be the same without him.

Rest In Peace, Ryan Davis.

I have yet to cry over a death. I wonder if I'm broken.

Steam Sale time! There's some good deals today, including Hotline Miami for $2 (I think, I can only see UK pricing). The soundtrack is also $2, and both are a f**king steal. I can't stop playing that game on my Vita right now.

So this is what Steam sales are like. Tempting... as usual, so many games, so much not time.

Bad time for me too. I'm currently feeding my Animal Crossing crack habit while testing out my new Wii U and trying to finish the Witcher2...the Steam sales are just teasing the s**t out of me.

Microsoft will now allow self-publishing on Xbox One. Actually, they say that any Xbox One console can be used to develop games, rather than requiring a dev kit.

What, the part about any console being a dev kit? Microsoft can authorise consoles to run pre-release code, for devs and (presumably) press.

I just couldn't not post this. Diablo 3 is getting an expansion. Apparently it involves the missing Archangel. They are adding a new class, a new artizen, and updating all the current systems to create a more robust end game experience.

Because I'm still kind playing D3 I'm going to get this for sure.

Seconded. What I appreciate is that hobo is more discriminating that other news sources I know of. He chooses pretty worthwhile stuff to report on. Thanks, hobo!

Okay then. Revving up the news engine.

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes (the "prologue" to Phantom Pain) is out on PS3/PS4/360/XBO in Spring 2014. It'll be available digitally for $20 on current gen systems and $30 on next-gen. A current-gen physical release will be available for $30.

Call of Duty is out. It's the callingest, dutiest one yet? Maybe?

Konami is making both DLC packs for Metal Gear Rising free. The game is $30 now too. It's pretty good!

Amazon tells me my PS4 copy of CoD has shipped. So I kinda now own a PS4 game and I think that's awesome.

BlizzCon is happening now! Two games have been announced: World of Warcraft: Warlords of Draenor and Heroes of the Storm. They've also said Hearthstone is coming to iOS and Android in the second half of 2014, which is way too far away.

There was a new Nintendo Direct today. Among other things, it announced a new 3DS system update that finally adds Nintendo Network ID linking and Miiverse.

They also announced that Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy (the last game in the series) will be out in North America on Feb 28th.

Thoughts on this article about FFVI Mobile?

FFVI is my favorite FF (probably favorite RPG), and I am honestly not bothered by this. Sure, it's cartoony, but all they did was draw the sprites in a larger size. The original resolution sprites *seem* to have much more detail, but that's because your brain fills in the gaps.

I never played FFV mobile, but I played FF Dimensions and thought the art style was horribly generic and it turned me off the game. FFVI is one of the most beautiful 16-bit games, so I'm wondering how much of that art style will disappear in the remake. It's pretty obvious they just farm out the art to some cheap studio, and they are basically recreating the existing sprites, only larger. So, the love and magic will largely be gone.

Watch this trailer, now.

That's the big thing coming out of the fairly awful Spike VGX last night. The other interesting news: Telltale Games are developing a Borderlands series (Tales from the Borderlands) and a Game of Thrones series, both due next year. Elijah Wood (Frodo) is playing the part of the boy in Double Fine's Broken Age (which looks amazing in motion). Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze's fourth playable character is Cranky Kong, who plays just like Scrooge McDuck, cane and all.

You can watch all the good bits here. There's a new trailer for The Witcher 3, an impressive tech demo for The Division's Snowdrop Engine, and footage of South Park, Titanfall, Quantum Break and Destiny.

I clicked on that second link and EVERY VIDEO started playing automatically at the same time! And I went to pause them all (by that time they were half over once everything loaded properly) and some of them had started playing again even though they were "paused"! I had to "play" them again and then pause them for real to finally get it all to stop. What the freak.

EDIT: I could only watch the Game of Thrones video (which had no content at all). Every other video only played the first few seconds, paused to buffer, then continue without showing any video. Those are the worst video players I've ever seen in my life. Are any of these trailers available for viewing anywhere else by any chance?

When a game world is "procedurally generated," that typically means that there won't be anything to do on it unless algorithms can now match the thoughtfully crafted narratives and environments of ace writers and level designers.

Uh, no.

But, cool trailer!

Grand is right though. You have to have a compelling narrative to give you a reason to explore the world, otherwise it'd get boring. Their tech could be used to build the basis for a very compelling Mass Effect type game. I mean, if all the planets are built in code, you are saving a ton of space by not having to store individual levels. You would have to figure out a way to shoe-horn a good mission/branching story onto the procedural world.

I've played procedural Mario, and it's just not as fun as playing levels designed by a human. But for RPGs, I could see it being pulled off, as long as there is a strong story to tie it all together. Most RPG quest trees seem like they were created by Mad Libs. "The (adjective) (character archetype) has (verb) the (magical property) (noun!). If we don't (verb) it, (bad thing) will happen!"

SteamOS beta is available to download. Sadly, there's no dual-booting at the moment, so I won't be trying it out.

Just thought I'd let you know that Zelda: Four Swords Anniversary Edition is back up on the 3DS eShop for this weekend only. It's still free, just like the first time around.

Nintendo announced today that they're shutting down Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection on May 20th. That includes all online functions for Wii and DS games, Prof. Layton weekly puzzle downloads, WarioWare DIY microgame sharing, etc. The only things not affected are video streaming apps, browsers and the Shop Channel/DSi Shop.

What I'm saying is that we need to have a Mario Kart DS reunion sometime in May.
