Post so it's finally time for me to play FFIV (2 on SNES)
I haven't finished a FF game since the original (and Mystic Quest on the SNES)...

And I've always wanted to play what was originally released here as FF2. I noticed today that Overstock.com is having a 4-day Video Game Super Sale, so I browsed through the items. Some of the prices are absurd (Bully on X360 for under $16), and I noticed two DS games I'm interested in for pretty cheap.

Turns out, they've got Final Fantasy IV for under $23 (that's with shipping), which is quite a bit less than I've seen it anywhere, even used.

So I figured I'd post about it here, because I'm interested in the thoughts/opinions of anybody who has ever played (any version of) FFIV, and because I figured if anybody was thinking about getting it, for themselves or as a Christmas gift, they'd be glad to see such a good deal.

Personally it is my 2nd fav FF game. First is FF6 aka FF3 in the US. 4 is super awesome though. I haven't totally completed the DS version but so far I'd say it is the definitive version of the game. At least it is to me.

This purchase will not disappoint.

I'd definitely get it and give it a try. The DS remake is great, even though I only got about halfway through it. It's extremely punishing. The Japanese original was pretty hard, and the DS version is slightly more so. You will need to grind, a lot, and certain monsters still have abilities that will just about one-shot your whole party. Good luck :D

Agreed, FFVI and IV are my favorites.

Dang, I still need to pickup the DS remake.

I'm certainly enjoying it so far. I'm almost a neophyte when it comes to RPG's, so I don't have much to compare it to, but it's pretty damn good.

I had been worried about the difficulty, because I'd read in a few places that the game was very hard. So far it's not been bad - I've only had my whole party KO'd a few times. But I probably over-do-it with the whole wandering around in the fields/forests to level up my characters. "Just one more level..."

I'm about to try to ascend the Mount of Ordeals.

Scarmiglione was a bitch, though I did manage to beat him with my entire party still standing on my third try. And that was without knowing that I could've just healed the f**k out of him. Oh well. Damn zombies.

I'm so glad they left that line untouched.

I played through probably 60% of the DS game and suddenly lost interest. Not sure why. The level grinding pissed me off at first, but it's worth it when you start being able to completely own monsters. It's actually not too bad...there are certain spots good for level grinding, usually around Chocobo forests. I think my favorite version is probably the one that came in FF Chronicles (along with Chrono Trigger), which is odd because apparently everyone hates that version. But yeah, it's a fantastic game...first FF I ever played, and still my favorite.

I don't remember that version of FF4 being bad. It was the Port of Chrono Trigger that was bad and is universally hated.

Yeah, Chrono Trigger is pretty tough to play through on disc, simply because of the ridiculous loading times. That's the only reason I don't like it, though. Aside from the cutscenes, it's mostly unchanged. I still played through it...guess I'm a patient person.

I like the FF Chronicles version of FF4 because of the translation. It's down to earth, and it actually sounds like a native English speaker could have written the script. The DS version seems too wordy. It's like they draw out sentences for no reason.

Assuming I get through this game and am in the mood for more RPG fun...

Should I shell out the $55 for the boxed SNES copy of Chrono Trigger that's available at the local used game shop, or just snag the $30 DS port?

DS port. It has the SNES original in there, or you can play the expanded DS version. It barely affects anything, so just play the new version.

SO FAR, I'm hearing that the DS port is very solid. But nostalgia is a bitch, and it won't feel exactly how you remembered if you're faking it.

*shrug* Might be worth it to pick up the snes copy now and sell it back when you get older as the value (hopefully) increases?

Any other opinions? I know KRIS has the portable copy for DS.

I would go DS, especially since you don't have any attachments to the original.

Anybody an expert on this game?

I'm at the first big Crystal fight, up against the Dark Elf / Dark Dragon.

Anyhow, I basically just have a question about how the EXP works. If an enemy is worth, say 2000 experience points according to a guide, does that mean every member of your party earns 2000 EXP if you beat the enemy, or is it 2000 divided by the number of party members? Meaning, with a party of 4, this enemy would really only yield 500 EXP for each member of the party.

Typically, in FF games, every member of the party receives the full amount of XP from an enemy.

Holy wrong - in just about every FF game, XP is split evenly (ish) between everybody left alive in your party. FFIV is not an exception.

So yes, an enemy worth 2000 XP would give 500 to each person in a party of four, and after battle, it will say "500 XP" gained instead of 2000 - none of the FF games will ever make you calculate the amount each person gets in your head.

Unlike Breath of Fire, but that's a story for another day.

Ok. Because I was confused, and none of the exhaustive guides on GameFaqs seems to address it.

I wouldn't even have thought to ask, but the first two times I killed the Dark Dragon, it was with three of my party members KO'd. So I got this whopping (39000+) amount of EXP, and I was like f**k this, I want my whole party to level up.

Then when I did it with everybody still alive, the EXP dropped to like 9900, and I was confused.

Confused, confused, so I asked here.
