Re: so it's finally time for me to play FFIV (2 on SNES)
I'm necro-bumping this to start a flame war.
I just finished this game, and I don't know why everybody has recommended it so highly. The plot, script, fight system, and imagery are barely good enough to give the world life, but I saw nothing compelling. There were several different points where I wanted to stop playing, but I figured I'd finish what I started. This game might have been awesome when I was eight years old and just wanted robot fights all the time, and that's a legitimate vote of confidence. But if adults see something great in there, it is beyond me.
I ended up being under-leveled for the final battle, and after about four attempts with different strategies I just watched the ending on YouTube. I didn't give a s**t about fighting the unconscious essence of a villain I had learned about only ten minutes earlier.
The music was rather good, at least. And I have now personally experienced "you spoony bard." If you're considering diving in, I must tell you that "you spoony bard" is not worth the effort.

Doing some cool things at certain points is no substitute for knowing why you're doing them, or why they would interest the characters in doing them in the first place. An elusive enemy is fine, but not one that straight up doesn't exist until the writers freak out because they forgot to plot.

Holy necrobump Batman! Just here to say that you are entitled to your opinion Linearity, but you were pretty much forcing yourself to play it. In my experience that never makes for a good experience. If you don't find the gameplay to be fun then why continue on? It isn't like this is a vastly different Final Fantasy game... they all play like this and they all have crazy story moments that make little sense at all. Have fun, and stop playing games that you don't enjoy.

Re: so it's finally time for me to play FFIV (2 on SNES)
I played the American version for the Super Nintendo, called "Final Fantasy II."
Learning about and going to the moon was f**king beast--I can't dispute that.
I really enjoyed Final Fantasy VI, which is why I'm claiming intuition of what's good and bad about this sort of game. FF6 has problems too, of course, but it generally fails gracefully and makes up for its shortcomings. Maybe what got me thinking about this is my memory of somebody here saying that FF4 is better than FF6, which I thought was outrageous now that I've played both games.
I'm interested in four paragraphs! I like talking about games. I'll try to not be an idiot, I promise.

Well I agree with Doom, the script/translation is pretty awful in the SNES version. Much more refined in the PSX Chronicles release and the newer PSP release, which I played myself this year. Good times! Just wish it was based off the Hard Type version like Chronicles was, it was way too damn easy.

The DS version was pretty amazing I thought. Yes, the FF II US version is pretty easy in comparison with other versions, the translation is so bad that you have no idea what's going on half the time, and there are missing spells and items. But, it's the version I grew up with and I loved it when I was 11.

Oh hey, it's in your signature! Karys!
The SNES version's script seemed to be correctly translated, but the real problem was the brevity of all the lines. Each line barely got its point across, and there wasn't much connection to the previous line. That problem seems to be mitigated in the DS version, from the little I've seen.

Re: so it's finally time for me to play FFIV (2 on SNES)
On the other hand I can't get on board with the DS remake or FFIII DS either (beat the NES version this year and loved it). Just ruins the aesthetics man! So those just aren't for me. Maybe if they were completely new games... but ugh. I'd love to see a proper fresh update of FFIII, done in the PSP style like with FFI, FFII, and FFIV. Keep it 2D, but just simplify things (menu's and such) and give it a new fresh coat of paint.

Yeah, I'm never touching Bleach. I've heard a lot of good things about One Piece, and have been putting it off for years now.
Back to FF4.

So hey, when you are fighting Golbez at the Dwarven Castle and are about to die, and then all of a sudden someone casts Heal on Cecil and you're like WTF and then it's Rydia and you're all Holy s**t that's awesome and then you cast Titan a bunch and win but golbez is still alive obviously.

Six pack.
12-packs are cost-efficient.
