Post Diablo 2.5 WAIT I MEAN TORCHLIGHT
This game deserves its own topic.

This game came out of nowhere for me. The first I'd heard of it was here, and when I heard "it's some of the same people who made Diablo and it's kind of like that" I felt it was worth checking out. When I saw it was $20 on steam, I bought it without hesitation (DAMN YOU STEAM AND YOUR CONVENIENCE) and not only is it exactly what I hoped it would be (a worthy Diablo clone), it's managed to improve on Diablo while maintaining all the things I liked about it in the first place.

Things I like:
Better socketed item management - you can de-socket a gem from an item (at the loss of one or the other) and choose whether you want to keep the item or the gem.
Liberal skill trees - you're not locked into one path, and the only requirement for applying fame points to any skills is your level. Even though there are only 3 "classes" this seems to mean you can play any of them as you'd like.
A "public stash" where you can leave items that any of your characters you create can access to use. This is in addition to your private stash.
There's a guy in town who will enchant items. Usually, this means good things, but occasionally you can make things worse. You can keep enchanting an item too, but every time you do, it costs more AND you increase the chances that you'll lose every special attribute. This happened to me last night - I got a really nice rare pistol with all sorts of enchantments already on it. I took it to the guy because I was hoping for a socket. I enchanted it once and got some added attribute enhancements. I enchanted it again and nothing happened. I enchanted it again and got some more magic enhancements, but still no socket. I did it one more time and lost everything - even the original enchantments it had when I found it.
No more repairing equipment.

Things I LOVE:
You have a pet, and your pet can carry items - as many as you.
You can send your pet back to town to sell your items while you continue to fight in the dungeon.
You're not limited to one potion per inventory cell - you can keep up to 20 in a single cell. Same goes for scrolls. This is probably my favorite feature.
You can teach your pet spells. My pet knows fireball and summon skeleton. I'm playing a ranged fighter, so I get to sit back and hammer on enemies while my pet and his skeletons run interference.
This game is beautiful. It's cartoony as hell, but I don't care.
The basic gameplay is totally diablo.
When you die - you get 3 choices: respawn where you died and lose $$ and experience. Respawn at the beginning of the level and lose experience. Respawn in town and lose nothing. I usually respawn at the beginning of the level, because I've only died in the "special" areas that are pretty small anyway.

Things I do not like:
Lack of sleep
Lack of getting other things done
There's no "identify all items" ability (aka Deckard Cain) or at least I haven't found it yet. You just have to buy a bunch of Scroll of Identify when you go back to sell your gear.

Also, when I first started playing, my sound on my computer wasn't working, so I had no idea what this game sounded like. I fixed that, and this game sounds *exactly* like Diablo. The music was so similar it couldn't be coincidence, so I looked in the credits, and sure enough, Matt Uelmen did the score.

Hmmm...when I looked up to make sure I was spelling is name correctly, I see that there's a game called "Fate" which seems to be very similar as well.

I'm getting this on Friday as I'm getting another paycheck this Friday and I have the money for it then :).

I'm really excited based on this review.

I picked it up launch day, play it on hardest difficulty. It is pretty damn amazing.

Actually like it better then Mythos.

Music is f**king awesome though.

So I take it you're going to play the MMO version of Torchlight when they finish it.

Yeah, the singleplayer version that we have now is pretty much their way of drumming up funds to develop the MMO. It will be one of those free-to-play rpgs with microtransactions for aesthetic things.. I will likely give it a try, but to be honest online RPGs are not my thing anymore. Depending on other people to actually do what they are supposed to just doesn't seem that fun anymore.

Chunk, you're basically playing an MMO sans the social element. Since I assume you like chatting with people online, and I know you like dungeon crawls, I am fairly positive you would enjoy any of the better MMOs out there. I am not sure why you have so stigmatized the addition of a social element to your action-RPGs.

I've stigmatized the social element of just about everything there is to do.

I prefer Massively Single-player Local.

That's what she said.

Shared Stash is prob my favorite part.
Cause i always find s**t for my other toons . I leveled up all 3 together so they always had decent gear.

Armor is pretty key in this game, which is odd

<3 this game holy s**t.

I didn't realize exactly how much fun clicking away as my character slaughters countless demons could be. I'm also pleased with all the neat little alcoves set up for the explorer types like myself. Every floor has fun little nooks and crannies to find. I'm only on floor 5 of the main area, and I love it so much. I've been making sure to do all of the side quests as they come up, especially the ones related to the book that you find for the guy. Guarunteed good loot right there.

On the topic of loot, this game is such a f**king lootfest. By level 5, I had all rare items equipped. By level 10, I had 2 Unique items. f**king win.

My only concerns about this game are the ones that chunk has already mentioned. Other than that, it's a nearly perfect game.

Post Re: Diablo 2.5 WAIT I MEAN TORCHLIGHT
Picked it up this weekend. I've been waiting for it to go half off for about a month now. It's great. It quite literally is diablo, even the f**king chords and strumming pattern of the guitar in the towns music.

Now if only I liked any of the classes as much as the orig. I'm running in very hard, hardcore mode right now and lost my barb to a steam conversation when I thought I killed everything.

I'm playing Alch right now and ejoying it somewhat, i'm about to hit level 5 and open up some good skills. Right now I'm just using teeth (or whatever they call it in this game) and it's awful.

I really like the shared stash.

Post Re: Diablo 2.5 WAIT I MEAN TORCHLIGHT
I bought it for myself and 3 friends last week when it was 9.99 (50% off) now I am just mad that I didn't wait for it to go to 75% off and save 20 bucks lolol.

It's worth every f**king cent of the 19.99 though, so I made out alright. I just lost my alchemist because I went full on pet build and got myself stuck in the portal guys portal.

I rerolled as a Bow User (f**k remembering, I think a Vanquisher) I love the s**t out of this game.

I miss you t_g, enjoy your vaycay.

Post Diablo 2 5 WAIT I MEAN TORCHLIGHT
a mini-Diablo clone Although Im sure a few have encountered it already, Torchwood is out on Steam as a demo and cheap release 20. It is from the Mythos guys, who were the old Blizzard North crew for the most part and is actually pretty fun.

It is simplistic and cartoony but has classic Diablo-esque random loot and some basic classes and silliness that works well. The demo lets you run them up to level seven or so and get a feel for the game at least plus has a pretty small footprint. I figure at 20 it is a decent little time-waster anyhow and surprisingly fun for that but at free you might as well check out the demo if you have a Steam account. You can also visit Runics site of course.
