Oh, also, RevansSisterRindr - every time I look at your name I think "Revan's Sister's Reindeer" and it's very distracting.

Awesome.

And, that made me lolirl, I never thought of that

It seems you got creative with norg's, too. I'll bet everyone else on the label is jealous that they weren't given the funny treatment.

But yes, I gots me a cd today! I found it to be punishingly good. I had to bring some work home with me today, and it couldn't wait to be done as I got in. I knew that I should listen to the album after finishing with the work, but I was too excited and decided to dive into both simultaneously. Well, I'd wager that doing any kind of work is difficult when you have to stop every eight or nine seconds to think, "what?!" or "no way!" or "whoah!" to yourself. I couldn't count how many times this album knocked me on the head for attempting to multi-task. Everything is solid. The writing, the arrangement, the composition, the performances, the recording, the mixing and mastering all demonstrate a staggering amount of talent and purpose that I should have known to expect from chunk and his crew.

The whole thing works so well as an album that singling out a favorite song to listen to every now and again in the future would be doing that song a disservice because each one is that much stronger in its proper context (and that's not a nice way of saying that nothing stands out). I read about how challenging the process was, but I'm glad that you put yourself through the wringer in crafting this album, chunk. You and your "bandmates" should really be quite proud to have your names attached to such a cool project, even if they are spelled funny. Thanks for this!

chunk wasn't joking about how "ultra rare limited edition" these discs are. They look like they were produced with a burned CD with a Staples-bought white inkjet label kit. Then distributed in white cardboard sleeves with an Avery label on them.

Post Re: chunkstyle "solo" album YES MAYHEM
The CDs themselves were actually professionally duplicated and printed. The cases themselves were makeshift as f**k.

Ok, by "professionally duplicated" I mean I used the duplicator here at work that has a printer built in. Actually, my boss did it for me because I had to leave work early that day to take my wife to the doctor. So, "professionally" is an absolutely appropriate term in this context.

DIY OR DIE

My plan for the CD cases was to make a sweet-ass stencil and spray paint them and then maybe let the kids go Jackson Pollock on them, but I got really really sick for about two weeks prior to PAX and then my wife got sick (see above about taking her to the doctor). That wrecked all my plans - it was the sickest I've ever been. That's a "what's on your mind" post I've been mulling over. The label was supposed to go on the back - not be the main event.

The last song was finished recording on Sunday 8/29, mixed on Monday 8/30, and mastered on Tuesday 8/31. I'd already set up the bandcamp so I just had to upload the last song, throw together some sort of graphic for that (which turned out pretty well, I think, all things considered), post about it here, then I had to duplicate those CDs on Wednesday before I left for PAX on Thursday. It took longer than I thought, so my boss actually hid the finished spindle outside our building and I picked it up on the way to the airport Thursday morning. And yes, I misspelled my name and norg's name. I didn't discover that until I got back from PAX. I actually laid out the labels in Photoshop on Grant's laptop at our merch booth at PAX and then printed them in the kinkos in the lobby of the convention center. I used a pdf template for those labels, and it had a transparent background. The name text was light gray on the screen, and I'm honestly surprised I didn't mess up a lot more. But dammit all, I met my goal of having the album done by PAX.

Ok, so my original goal was PAX '09, but still, I got it done by *A* PAX.

So yes, I spent a couple of frantic hours putting together those CD cases, and a year and a half putting together the music. You see where my priorities lie.

You know, it's weird, I can't ever remember anybody ever saying to wear your Sunday best. Like not once in my life. But at a wedding rehearsal last week the coordinator guy said it and it immediately made me think of Yes, Mayhem.

This morning, in the car, the n00b kept asking to hear "Edward." I said, "I don't know what that is, buddy, can you sing it?"

"you came by this morning, EDWARD scaring the children..."

Been listening to Yes, Mayhem a lot (through speakers of dubious quality), and just heard
Naked Fight through nice headphones. Whole new level of awesome, here comes another listen through. :metroidanim:

I shall dress up as a scary Edward for Halloween and come to your place. :)

I checked out James's week-long record again yesterday. It made for some great driving music. Tell that kid to remaster it already.

DONE! He set up a bandcamp for it and everything: http://thejamesmachine.bandcamp.com/album/sour-grapes

Actually, he put several albums up there.

Also, by popular demand, James made some vocals-only mixes of the yes, mayhem songs. There are a lot of subtleties that get lost in the bombast, and it's really worth checking out all that went into those vocal performances. Also, these are James' mixes of the vocals, and the ones on the album are my mixes, so there may be things that are emphasized more than others based on our personal tastes. He trimmed out all the blank spaces, so it's less awkward. He said he was very embarrassed and this was something he'd never do otherwise, but enough people asked and so he did it.

http://blog.thejamesmachine.com/2010/10 ... nly-mixes/

There's some bulls**t going on with the embedded players on that page, but there are download links.

Of course, Naked Fight has huge layering going on, but I think my favorite might be Reliable. It made the hair on the back of my neck stand up when I was mixing it.

Just so you know, Revan, what you have amounts to demos for the next TWO albums. I'm going to try for shorter releases more frequently.

That's what she said?

I'm going to leave this here:

http://chunkstyle.net/mayhem2/preview/a ... review.mp3

I'll be posting this to my blog and to facebook soon, but I thought I'd drop it here first.

This isn't the final master - I did some quick mastering for loudness, but that's it. This is the same track I posted with drum and bass before, but now it's got all its parts including my first ever (public) recording of my upright (played arco). That's buried in the mix, but when I A/B it, I can tell it's there. I added that at the last minute because I felt like the overall sound was lacking in the low end, even though I'm droning an open A almost the whole song. Nothing is dronier than a bowed bass except maybe a didgeridoo, and I don't have one of those.

Grant killed this one. Then James came along and did his thing and now I can't stop listening to this. Double kill.

TRIVIA: I recorded part of this while Hobo was at my house, setting up his new iPad 2. If you listen closely, you can probably hear him cursing iTunes.

Personnel:
James: vocals
Grant: guitars
Kevin: drums
me: PLAY ALL THE BASS

Before I broke out my upright, I played a track on my new* fretless, but I ended up scrapping that, so almost all of my basses are covered (ho ho! sorry). There is one track on the album which will feature (HEAVILY) my fretless, and I'm pretty proud of it.

*newly defretted, epoxied, and sanded. It's ok.

Enjoy!

So good, so good. Tons of awesome harmony and melody work here. If I was a music teacher I'd definitely pull some choice examples.

 Crazy!! Crazy awesome, that is.

And I did lol at that.

Also, the new track is in the stratosphere, man. It sounds amazing. This one's definitely gonna take a while to sink in. It's like almost more awesome than I can handle.

edit: what's trippin me out is I can't quite figure out the emotional vibe of this song, like it's too complex for me. totally not what i expected but i'm loving it
