I thought of you and thought of V, but I don't count that as a super hero movie.

Yeah, I don't really count it as one either, but I figured I'd throw that out there in case other people do.

This reminds me, we need to get Poop to referee a Stoopcast with you and me on flickchart or whatever that site was. Should be a hoot.

Ok, seriously, what's the difference between Donairs, Gyros, and Shawarma? I get that Gyros are Greek. But, they're all fundamentally the same thing!

Shawarma describes the meat. Gyro describes the sandwich.

According to Wikipedia, they're regional names for the same basic thing, referring to the way the meat is prepared (ie shaved off a big spit o' meat).

Man, I could eat a doner kebab right now.

So, yeah I watched "Melancholia" (which I think I misspelled in the other thread) because of a netflix ad and I was like "sure" and the synopsis sounded amazing.
The movie was... incredible. It was unexpected at times even though you knew the end from the beginning. I'm not sure what else to say. After watching the movie I found out the director said he was a nazi or something, and the movie was so good I don't even care. It would be considered "slow" by people whose most anticipated movie of the year is "Expendables 2". It is a profound and evocative movie. A masterfully blended contrast of cosmic and mundane. Go see it on Netflix. I only wish I had known this was in theatres.

Melancholia lived up to its name and bummed me the f**k out. Boring, slow but I couldn't not watch it to the end.

He was joking, he just really sucks at joking, apparently. I wrote a WILT about it last year, because it amused me. It's here if you'd like to read it.

Inn Keepers, The Cars that Ate Paris, and The Plumber have been sitting next to my TV for AGES. It's time to start watching movies again now that I'm done playing guitar for like 3 weeks.

For some reason the movie captivated me. I don't think it's my favorite movie, but it may be one of the best movies I've ever watched. I just loved it.

Thanks for the link, E! I enjoyed your exposition. What was your opinion of the movie?

Haven't seen it. It's on my list. I've been pretty good about getting to the stuff in the theaters but my DVD watching has been virtually non existent lately.

hmmmm...just watched Prometheus. Still processing, but I liked bits, and didn't like other bits. I think Sir Scott should have explained some things a little better, or just left them well alone... just sayin.

I think the whole Alien creation sequence needed a little more than ten seconds of fanboygasm right at the end. I know he didn't want to go further, but I felt it really needed more. We'll see what happens in the directors cut...

I enjoyed it.

I thought Fassbender was creepy as hell which was great. Noomi Rapace was not too shabby either.

Shaw != Ripley though. Not even close.

They were definitely the highlights, yeah.

The blonde chick ...awful, awful. lol, well I kind of think she was alright, but the character in general was so messed up. It really felt like the movie tried to make you care about her for some odd reason, and I didn't at all.

But yeah the more I think about it, the more I like the movie. Just not sure if it's a classic or anything. I'm also not sure if I'd recommend the 3D. There wasn't really anything to it, compared to like Avatar or something.

I liked Prometheus alot, but it I agree just didn't quite leap into classic territory. It felt like something was missing. I think my expectations were too high, and understandably so. Still a great movie, though. So David essentially created the alien by infecting Charlie who transferred it to Elizabeth who gave birth to the thing that impregnated the "engineer", right? It appears that the alien mutates each time it goes through another species. I need to watch Alien again.

I think you're correct.

Might be a spoiler potentially.

The Xenomorphs in Alien, Aliens, and Alien: Resurrection (the queen hybrid not withstanding) were humanoid (bipedal) whereas the one in Alien 3 was more like a dog (quadruped) as the dog was the host. There is also the Predalien from AvP but that's a whole other mess.

Yeah, I've always thought it was implied throughout the Alienverse, but I do think they loosely take on the form of their hosts. Although I guess some weirdness here is that the aliens torso's look... kind of like the engineers' armor, metallic even, but that's not organic so I guess that's a little weird? If that's making any sense at all.

Also major Prometheus spoilers. Very interesting stuff.

In a funny way I think it might be more comparable to Blade Runner, theme wise at least. Definitely a lot of obvious comparisons when you think about it, mainly with the whole life, death, and creation ideals.

On that note it motivated me to rewatch Blade Runner, first time seeing the Final Cut... glorious Bluray, just wow. The movie completely has me by the balls at this point. It gets better every single time I watch it. Dare I say it, it just might straight up be my all time favorite. You really have to be in the mood for it, but damn it's so good.

Probably going to rewatch Alien as well sometime soon. I picked up the Anthology after hearing this and Aliens look insane in Blurary and it's definitely true (like Blade Runner) after skimming around some. I just can't believe how good these films look cleaned up and everything. Looks like they were made today. Can't say that for a lot of other 30 years old movies, heh.

My opinion is still in flux. I'ma give it another watch. But I'm not liking the convolutedness and plot weirdness. This guy is way smarter than me, but I did notice this: http://gizmodo.com/5917079/neil-degrass ... hy-science

When Charlize Theron says "we're half a billion miles away" I thought to myself "well that wouldn't even get you out of our solar system, lol". I didn't know it would be exactly past Jupiter a bit, but yeah. That's pretty bad. However it's very minor, as it was an off-hand remark made by a character, and not meant to be a definitive statement. A worse gaffe made by her character, as you pointed out Danimal, is that she forgot to run sideways at the end. I was pretty surprised by that. Someone pointed out in the redditt thread they posted on your comment that it could have been symbolic of her philosophical "blinders" or somesuchthing, but it also could just be dumb.

Yep. Check out the link I posted above. Some of it is cool, and some of it is laughable. I'm not sold on the black slime of evilness, and the running straight thing... was just dumb.
