Post Re: What are you currently reading?
So I just started a book (The Book Of The New Sun by Gene Wolfe) with a quote on the front: "The best SF novel of the last century". The author is someone I haven't heard of before. Does the person making that statement truly realize what he's saying? The last century is home to the best SF authors in history. In fact SF was not even recognized as a genre more than a century ago. The entire works of Isaac Asimov, H.P. Lovecraft, Philip K. Dick, and a dozen other masters of the craft reside within the last century. So either that guy is insane, or I'm going to really like this book.

edit: I'm betting on the former.

PROTIP: When a book has a tagline: "Best <WHATEVER> in the last <TIME PERIOD>", it's probably not the truth. I've heard good things about the book/author but haven't read it. Let us know if you dig it.

Hm. That makes sense. Well, this "Neil Gaiman" character must not read SF, like, ever.

Haha, I've been reading some Neal Gaiman lately. American Gods is an amazing book.

Well, I guess you could say that "the last century" might mean this new one? But if that were the case, I would have shot my hyperbole wad with the word "millennium" instead.

Also, in highly related news, I am reading American Gods.

That's on my list after A Feast for Crows, A Dance with Dragons, Harry Potter 4-7, and Fahrenheit 451.

Lololol exactly. As he said "last" century, I can only take that one of two ways. The last century as in the one before this, or the last century as in the last 100 years, back to 1911. Either way, he would be ignoring every good SF book ever. (Come at me, Jules Verne fans)

I just started The Death and Life of Great American Cities by Jane Jacobs. It's way cool. I'm only in the first chapter and I can't put it down.

Oh and I started reading a comic book called Scalped by Jason Aaron and R. M. Guéra. I'm through two collected volumes so far. It is really good but really dark. Every character is murderous, uneducated, manipulative, pregnant, addicted to drugs, and heartless.

By the time you finish that RoR book, it'll be obsolete.

I just finished Christopher Hitchens' memoir, Hitch 22, last weekend. Superb read. I really wish he had been able to stick around for a while longer.

It was quite good, but it got a little boring at parts I thought.

I just finished up Pushing Ice by Alistair Reynolds. It was very... hard to describe. It ended up in a place VERY far from where it started.

Now I am finally trying to finish The Space Opera Renaissance, which I started like 2 years ago but only made it about 70% through (out of like a thousand pages, book is looong!) It's a collection of short stories and it is pretty awesome, I definitely recommend it.

I'm reading Sun Tzu's "The Art of War". It's interesting, although a little disjointed to read with all the annotations by the translator.

Finished Harry Potter ad the Deathly Hallows last night. I can now say I read the books and I'm glad I did. Far superior to the films.
