Actually, to be honest no I don't. I see other artists around me and they manage to hone their musical prowess to near perfection. Mine is riddled with imperfections and it drives me mental...but not to the point of obsessive perfectionism. It's a shame really cause I'd like to get to that point some day.

The key to writing interesting new music is to totally rip off good stuff that no one else has heard. I do it subconsciously all the time, and it's always embarrassing when I realize it.

There's a scene in "Straight No Chaser," the Thelonious Monk biopic, where he describes a time where he kept dreaming about this amazing song, and finally he managed to get out of bed to go play it at the piano where he could write it down as some new masterpiece. When he got to the piano and played it, he realized he'd been dreaming about a really common jazz standard. That part was hilarious and vindicating for me.

Writing your own music is way easier than learning covers - no one can tell you you're doing it wrong.
